I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt. - Exodus 3:10 "No man should think himself a zero, and think he can do nothing about the state of the world." Baruch, Bernard US financier and government adviser (1870–1965) Many times I have faced tasks for which I feel ill-equipped and unprepared. I can identify with Moses who was probably cheering when God said that He had come to deliver His people from slavery in Egypt (Exodus 3:8). What a shock for Moses when God announced that this deliverance would occur through none other than him (Exodus 3:10). Moses gave excuse after excuse, culminating in “I have never been eloquent” (Exodus 4:10). In response, God gave Moses a promise (Exodus 4:12 I will...teach you what you are to speak) and someone to help him (Aaron). And in spite of Moses’ reluctance and hesitation, God used Moses to speak to Pharaoh and lead the Israelites out of Egypt. We don’t have to know everything about advocacy, be able to answer every question or even be eloquent. The most important thing is to be available to God and let Him work through you. We learn from the story of Moses that God will enable you to speak up for those who are poor and oppressed, so that they can enter into God’s freedom and justice. And it is good to have others to share the journey with, who will encourage us. Reflection: God of power, I offer you my voice and my life, so that those suffering injustice and oppression, who have no voice, may experience your liberation. Amen. |
