Features- It is not a front to back read of the Old Testament, rather it is the Old Testament in a historical context.
- You will be reading the Old Testament over 2 years as it unfolded in history.
- This brings a greater depth of understanding of the bible and its major themes.
- It is only 2 chapters a day, allowing for our busy travellers, busy parents, busy workers and slow readers like me.
- Everyone will be reading the same passages at the same time which encourages community spiritually, not just socially.
How to Use it- It is a resource not a task.
- My encouragement would be to leave the days you miss. You will come around to them again over the years. Playing catch-up is generally a depressing thing and takes life out of God's word.
- Remember it is a relationship with God we are after - not a to-do list from him.
- Pray – Pray that God will reveal the scriptures he wants to speak to you about that day.
- Read – Read the 2 chapters marking the scriptures that grab you
- Reflect – Pick the verse that you sense God is raising for you and why
- Journal – Buy a journal. Write the verse out and then start praying, talking to God by writing a letter to him about what the verse means, but also fill the page with thanksgiving prayers and the things you face today. Write thoughts that come to mind in the form of a prayer to God. Don't write too fast! Let God lead you in your prayer journaling. The whole thing will take about 45 minutes but it sets your day in motion or, if you do it in the evening, it puts your day in perspective and sets you up for tomorrow.
Don't Give Up!- I believe the key to Christianity is daily re-orienting yourself to God's will for your life. That is what this bible reading program and journaling will do.
- I encourage you to try a new translation of the bible every 2 years. Some great translations to start with are – level 66, New Living Translation, The Message or the NIV.
- My final message to you is never give up on being in his word daily. If you don't hit 365 days first year then okay - hit 150 days (that is 3 times a week). Plan to build your daily time with God over the years, not just have a great first 2 weeks.
- If you do this Bible Reading Program for the next 10 years you could have potentially read the New Testament 10 times and the Old Testament 5 times and it will change your life.
May God bless you as you delight in his word like the saints of old and may his word lead you to a bold new life lived for him, through him. In Jesus name, Amen. Mark Chapple Mske Us Wise |
