The Mindfulness Issue ... Being mindful of God and others

When was the last time you stepped out the front door and found yourself in a completely unknown environment? When each sensory experience, from the sounds of the streets to the air you breathe, arrests you to the point where all you can do is stop... and take it in? For Global Interaction cross-cultural workers Janelle, Scott, B and Phil, the answer is everyday. When they left the familiarity of home to serve in Africa and Asia, they expected their lives to rapidly transform as they adjusted to new languages and ways of life. But what surprised them was that the transition also brought remarkable clarity, calm and mindfulness.

The Transition Issue

You learn a lot about yourself at your 21st birthday party. Just when all the baby pictures have been put away, the music fades and you nervously wait for your friends take centre stage ... ready to reveal a little-known fact or two about the real you. Fortunately, I got off pretty easy that night ... not too many skeletons in my ultra-organised closet. Along with jests about my supernatural spring-cleaning abilities came a welcome reminder about my fascination with places I’d never been and experiences I’d never had.

The Technology Issue

Sitting on the train coming home from uni I’m a hive of activity – rant on Facebook, Instagram a pic of my designer sushi and reply to a friend’s dinner invite with a smiley face. With my smartphone in hand I’m the master of my domain. This is the world I live in. I’ve now checked in with everyone in my virtual world.

It’s not until I take a rare moment to look up from phone that I realise I’m surrounded by people.

It's the Economy of God, Stupid!

The business section of the newspaper scares many of us, but the economy is more than just numbers and symbols. Money, or its lack, has a huge power to shape our sense of wellbeing. Jesus understood this power. When he spoke of sheep, seeds, fields and meals, he was telling everyday stories about the bread and butter issues that most affected people's lives. Bill Clinton also knew this during his successful 1992 presidential campaign against George Bush Senior. Clinto knew that there was one thing that mattered to voters. His winning campaign slogan was: "It's the economy, stupid."

In the last edition of Resonate we heard from Global Interaction team members about how they made initial connections with people in cross-cultural settings. They wrote about finding common interests, offering hospitality and making efforts to begin friendships. In Making Meaningful Connections, Susan Campbell talks with Global Consultant for Practical Evangelism Mark Holt about what happens next.
