Our History in East Timor

A team of young people, four from our church, visited East Timor for the first time in 2007. They went with a group from Yooralla Youth Ministries and worked on the construction of Houses of Hope. Since then, we have participated each year in construction and mission work in Seurtulan.

Yooralla Youth Ministries Australia is a non-profit, non-denominational Christian Youth Ministry. They work with local church communities and other organisations both in Australia and overseas to improve the present conditions of people through physical assistance, emotional improvement and spiritual reconciliation with God. Yooralla's journey started in late 1996 with a small team of friends committed to one thing above all else:-

Impacting lives through the Gospel of Jesus Christ by our actions, our love for others, in our compassion for the lost and also in our words. (see Matthew 28:19-20)

In July 2010 a team of 26 people, including 6 children, from HVBC spent two weeks in East Timor as part of a group of 40 from Yooralla Youth Ministries. Linking in with the long-term vision of Youth With a Mission in East Timor, they lived out the challenge in Micah 6:8 by contributing to the vision for the village of Seurtulan, one of the poorest villages in the nation. The overall plan for the village, which is in a mountainous region 3 hours from the capital, Dili, includes the construction of 37 homes, a school building, a health clinic, rebuilding of the Church Community Centre, training of a health worker and school teacher and the teaching of various skills. With the work well underway, we concentrated on the building of homes, as well as being involved in teaching English, kids activities, preaching, testimonies and music.
